In recent years the proliferation of mobile devices, especially mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs), has increased rapidly. At the same time, wireless communication has improved considerably, and the usage of mobile devices with access to the Internet is possible almost anywhere and anytime. However, the usage of mobile technology and mobile applications to support business processes, transactions and working tasks is still low, compared to their potential.

The Mobile Business Research Group of the University of Mannheim thus wants to explore the potential benefits and the factors of acceptance for the market, both for business-to-consumer and for business-to-business applications. From a technical point of view our goal is to develop a generic software infrastructure, middleware and client and server components that help to overcome the challenges faced in the development of innovative mobile business applications. With the interdisciplinary organization of the project team, including members from the faculties of Mathematics and Computer Science and Business Administration, the group has the power to analyze the problems in mobile business applications from different points of view, and to develop innovative solutions.

Beginning with the two projects LAMBADA and SALSA, the Mobile Business Research Group has successfully built up technology and a generic software platform for context-sensitve mobile commerce applications. Currently we are working on the GEM project (funded by the DFG) that focuses on infrastructures and key applications for mobile business.

Funding for our projects comes from different sources, including the "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft", the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts of the State of Baden-Württemberg and the Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg. Industry is welcome to join, and we cooperate well with SAP AG in Walldorf and CAS in Karlsruhe.
